4. My name is Lorena. I met Nicolle when I first moved to Texas and started at Sycamore Elementary. I was new, and she was one of the first people who made me feel like I belonged. We had homeroom together, we were born the same year, and we even lived around the corner from each other.
   When I think of her, I see us as kids—riding bikes, laughing, talking about boys… and those birthday hayrides Ms. Willie Bee took us on.
   That was Nicolle—she always showed up. I’ll never forget when I had my son, she just appeared at my mom’s house and said, ‘Lorena, you got a baby.’
   Even though life took us in different directions, those memories stayed with me. I’m grateful I got to have her as a friend.
