Ricky Langs was born on October 12, 1962, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Mr. David Derrow and Mrs. Bobbie Wofford. As the oldest of four children on his mother’s side and the oldest of four on his father’s side, Ricky quickly became accustomed to being a leader in his family, a role that would shape his personality throughout his life. He was known for his big heart, infectious personality, and his ability to light up any room he walked into.
Growing up in Fort Worth, Ricky attended Arlington Heights High School and graduated in the Class of 1980. He was always the life of the party, the one who could make any gathering feel like the most exciting event in the world. To Ricky, life was about connection, laughter, and making memories that could never be taken away.
His love for family and friendship ran deep, and it was during his time in the Butler Housing Projects that Ricky truly found a second home. In those close-knit, often challenging surroundings, Ricky developed lifelong friendships with people who became family. He wasn’t just part of the neighborhood; he became a cornerstone of it, offering a sense of warmth and unity to everyone around him. The bond he formed there was something special, and the memories made in The Butlers would always hold a special place in his heart.
Ricky was a man who refused to see any encounter as the last. While many would say goodbye when parting ways, Ricky always said “later.” For him, “later” meant there was no finality-it was a promise that we would meet again, that the chapter was just on pause, not closed. It was this attitude of optimism and anticipation that made his presence so magnetic. His words carried weight, and his energy was contagious.
Though Ricky may no longer walk among us, the impact of his smile, his laughter, and his unwavering belief in connection continues to resonate. His life was one of love, friendship, and unforgettable memories. He was, and always will be, a true testament to the power of living fully and loving deeply.
Ricky was proceeded in death by his father David Derrow, stepfather Thessalonians Wofford, and bonus dad Lonnie Ford, Grandmother Dorothy “Grandma” Langs and paternal grandmother Edna “Big Momma” Moore.
Leaving to cherish his legacy, his daughters, Latrice Ervin and Shelby Johnson. His mother, Bobbie Wofford, sister, Tammy Langs-Jacobs (Charles Jacobs), sister, Melody Langs, sister Shemicka Taylor, brother, Thess Langs, sister, Colby Derrow- Steward and a host of relatives and friends.
