On March 5, 1935 Willie Mae Broughton and Frank Kendrick had a beautiful baby girl in Tyler, Texas. They named her Erma Jean Broughton.

Erma attended school in Tyler and later started her family there.  She then moved to Fort Worth to finish raising her family. She was a hard worker and spent countless hours feeding her family, friends, the church family and countless others.

In 1976, she gave her life to Christ and spent the rest of her life devoted to the Lord.  If you knew Erma, Mama, Big Mama, Mother Johnson, Missionary Johnson, Jean, Aunt Jean or Granny just about every Sunday after church you could expect a hot meal. Those who knew her well could get that million-dollar smile from a few things, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, the word of God and spending time with her extra-large family especially her grandchildren.  Erma always looked forward to family gatherings. She especially loved cooking for others.  Hot water cornbread, greens and chicken and dressing was her specialty.

Erma cherished her time with her siblings and kept in frequent contact with them. She was a prayer warrior and a backbone for her church and her family. It was not unusual to catch her on the phone praying for someone near or far. She was loved by many and she showed her love by always being willing to lend a helping hand. She was the backbone to our family and will truly be missed.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Mae Broughton and Frank Kendrick; son, Gregory Kendrick; sisters, Warnell Alexander, Pauline Broughton, Dorothy Broughton, Mildred Bennett, Billie Irby, and brothers, Noble Broughton, Harry Broughton and Darryl Maddox.

She leaves to cherish her memories: Her children, Shelly Gray, LaVetta Phillips, Tony McGee and wife Sandy , Darryl McGee and wife Ann, Reginald McGee, Regina Grissom and Sonya McGee; Brother, Myrson Maddox of Longview, Texas; 27 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
